Ouagadougou:The Minister of Servants of the People, Mathias Traor, announced that 20,854 positions have been filled in Burkina Faso's State Public Service from September 2022 to October 2026. This announcement was made during the government exhibition at the third edition of the Days of Patriotic Commitment and Citizen Participation (JEPPC).
According to Burkina Information Agency, Minister Traor emphasized that the number of positions could be even higher when considering recruitments by independent administrative authorities, state-owned companies, local authorities, and other decentralized public administration entities. These efforts aim to enhance the public administration's workforce, providing necessary human resources for fulfilling its missions.
Several reforms and innovations were highlighted by the ministry, including the renaming of the ministry itself to reflect its commitment to serving citizens. A notable development in public service is the creation of the General Inspectorate of Human Resources, designed to ensure effective control and presence of public officials at their posts.
Since December 2015, decentralization has allowed regional directorates to handle civil servant promotions and tenures. This change has benefited 73,712 civil servants. Additionally, the long-planned grade advancement system was finally implemented in 2026, impacting 42,224 public sector employees, including retirees.
The ministry also tackled fraudulent entries into the civil service by verifying diploma authenticity, excluding about twenty individuals. In employment, the new Labor Code was adopted, regulating job placements and temporary work, while increasing the minimum wage.
In terms of social protection, the universal health insurance scheme began providing benefits from February 2026, with 451,182 individuals registered. The budget for loans for retirees and laid-off individuals increased significantly, and scholarships were awarded to orphans of pensioners.
Modernization efforts include the launch of the e-Service platform, enhancing access to administrative and salary information, and expanding online exam preparation resources. These reforms focus on rational recruitment, appropriate training, and a merit-based administration.
