Burkina Faso: SOPAMIB Presents Intelligent Energy Management Systems at SEERA 2025

Ouagadougou: The 6th edition of the African Energy and Renewable Energy Week (SEERA) took place from November 7 to 9, 2025, in Ouagadougou under the theme "Agriculture-Energy-Water Nexus: Challenges and Opportunities." The event featured the participation of the Burkina Faso Mining Participation Company (SOPAMIB), which showcased its vision for future energy management.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Faustin Sawadogo, Deputy Managing Director of Wahgnion Gold Operations, stressed the importance of energy as the cornerstone of all activities. He highlighted the necessity of mastering energy to ensure an effective interconnection between water and agriculture.

Sawadogo explained that the installation of photovoltaic solar systems and mini solar power plants is a critical step toward achieving energy control. This initiative is planned for the Boungou mine, with the aim of meeting their objectives by 2030.

Sawadogo also mentioned the project to connect the Wahgnion mine to the national electricity grid of SONABEL (National Electricity Company of Burkina Faso), which is seen as a long-term strategy. This interconnection is expected to save 45% of production costs, reduce CO2 emissions, and improve the carbon footprint for future generations.

Additionally, energy efficiency and saving projects have been initiated at the Boungou mine, focusing on controlling electricity consumption and installing smart systems. These systems, which respond to the access badges of room and office occupants, help reduce energy usage.

At the Wahgnion mine, smart systems are also being deployed, including solar pumps that provide local communities with water access and support agricultural activities. These systems are designed to meet the specific needs of the communities.

SOPAMIB and its subsidiaries, Wahgnion and Boungou, are committed to being a civic group that considers the aspirations of the communities and integrates products like the agriculture-water-energy Nexus, according to Sawadogo.

In line with their energy commitments, SOPAMIB aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote sustainable energy efficiency within the mining sector.
