Ouagadougou: More than 14 million long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) will be distributed free of charge in Burkina Faso in 2025, according to an announcement made by the Minister of Health, Dr. Lucien Robert Kargougou. These nets are expected to be distributed across 70 health districts, reaching an estimated coverage rate of 97% of households, with an overall cost of 33,129,418,960 CFA francs.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the national campaign for the universal and free distribution of LLINs aims to bolster the fight against malaria, which remains a significant public health issue in the country. Dr. Kargougou emphasized the results of the campaign as a testament to the commitment of national authorities, the strength of community organization, and the quality of multi-sectoral coordination.

Malaria continues to present a major challenge, accounting for over 33% of consultations, nearly 44% of hospitalizations, and 8.7% of deaths in health facilities, as reported in the 2024 Statistical Yearbook. The distribution campaign, which occurred from June 18 to July 22, 2025, received substantial support from national authorities and international partners, including the Global Fund, the US Department, CHAI, and Mentor Initiative.

Dr. Kargougou lauded the efforts of administrative authorities, health workers, distributors, and communities, highlighting the importance of proper mosquito net usage, particularly by children under five and pregnant women. He cautioned that improperly used or maintained nets would not effectively save lives.

The workshop held on February 20, 2026, aims to allow stakeholders to review the campaign's outcomes, consolidate its successes, and address any shortcomings to enhance future distributions, ensuring they are more effective and tailored to the population's needs.
