Burkina Faso Urban Landscaping Project Launched to Transform Cities by June 2026

Ouagadougou: The Minister of State in charge of Agriculture, Commander Isma«l Sombie, has inaugurated the urban landscaping initiative across Burkina Faso, with a directive for the Directorate General of the Environment and Living Conditions (DGECV) to complete the project by the end of June 2026. The launch took place on Monday in Ouagadougou and aims to capitalize on the rainy season for optimal development.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the landscaping project for the year 2026 involves the development of 80 green spaces, 60 roundabouts, 65 kilometers of roadside plantings, and 10 kilometers of avenues in various cities across the country. The plan also includes creating an ecological park, enhancing the Bangr-Weogo urban park, and establishing a forest therapy and zoological area in Bobo-Dioulasso's Kua forest.

Minister Sombie emphasized the importance of not merely constructing infrastructure but ensuring it becomes self-sustaining. He highlighted that kiosks in certain areas would promote local products derived from national expertise rather than serve as informal eateries.

The Director General of the Environment and Living Conditions, Abdoulaye Bazie, explained that these projects align with the Minister of State's vision. After an assessment, it was determined that planned green areas and relaxation spots in cadastral plans should be effectively developed as eco-citizen rest areas, contributing to the fight against climate change. Mr. Bazie expressed gratitude to partners for their support and hoped the initiative would transform cities into peaceful gardens, reflecting the determination of the Burkinab¨ people.

Dr. Patrice Forogo, representing the technical and financial partners, underscored the civic responsibility to support this development initiative. He remarked that Burkina Faso is experiencing significant transformation driven by the Popular Progressive Revolution (RPP), rooted in values of sovereignty, dignity, social justice, and resilience. He emphasized the duty of economic actors to manifest this dynamic through impactful actions for citizens and reiterated the partners' commitment to collaborate with the Ministry of Agriculture and the government throughout this transformation journey.
