Ouagadougou: The Burkinabe government inaugurated a mausoleum dedicated to Thomas Sankara, the leader of the Democratic and Popular Revolution of August 1983, at the Council of the Entente. This site marks the location of his assassination on October 15, 1987, alongside twelve of his companions. The event aims to honor their memory and the fight for freedom and sovereignty.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ou©draogo emphasized the significance of this act of remembrance, noting that Sankara and his comrades sacrificed their lives for the ideals of dignity, freedom, integrity, and sovereignty. During a speech delivered on behalf of President Ibrahim Traor©, Ou©draogo stated that although Sankara and his companions have fallen, they remain alive in the hearts and minds of the Burkinabe people.
The inauguration ceremony in Ouagadougou was attended by various dignitaries, including the Prime Ministers of Senegal and Chad, Security Ministers from Mali and Niger, and delegations from Ghana. Ou©draogo highlighted that the mausoleum serves as a place of memory for those who cherish peace and social justice, reminding the public of the sacrifices made by Sankara and his companions.
Ou©draogo further described the mausoleum as a testament to integrity and resilience, embodying the recognition of a struggling people. He assured that the Burkinabe are committed to preserving these achievements and continuing the work of their heroes toward liberation from imperialism and neocolonialism.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the Thomas Sankara Memorial is designed not only as a place of remembrance but also as a space for reflection, education, inspiration, and action. Its purpose is to keep the revolutionary spirit alive and to highlight Sankara's efforts to combat oppression and imperialist domination.
Colonel-Major Daouda Traor©, president of the International Committee of the Thomas Sankara Memorial, remarked that the mausoleum's inauguration is a pivotal step in promoting the ideals of the national hero. He acknowledged President Faso, Captain Traor©, for driving efforts to recognize Sankara's contributions and values.
Colonel-Major Traor© also noted that additional infrastructure, such as a memorial house, museum, library, exhibition hall, shops, multi-purpose hall, and innovation workshops, are planned to complement the mausoleum.
The ceremony concluded with twenty-one cannon shots, a ribbon-cutting, and a wreath-laying tribute to Thomas Sankara and his companions.
