Ouagadougou: The Burkinabe government wants to authorize the National Assembly to exceptionally approve agreements that establish a Federation, a Confederation or the entry of Burkina Faso into a union of States at the African level.According to the minutes of the Council of Ministers of August 21, 2024, the government has acted on the amendment of Article 147 of the Constitution to add a paragraph that will allow the National Assembly to approve federation, confederation agreements or the entry of Burkina Faso into a union of States at the African level. The same source indicates that this legislative approval will be made after the opinion of the Constitutional Council. As a reminder, Article 147 of the Constitution provides that agreements that establish a Federation, a Confederation or the country's entry into a Union of States at the African level can only be approved by a referendum of the people. For the Minister in charge of Justice, Rodrigue Bayala, approval by referendum of the people will be m aintained because national sovereignty belongs to the people. However, he added, this is about making an opening to allow the State to adapt to emergency situations and cases of force majeure.Source: Burkina Information Agency
