Burkina: VOA banned from broadcasting for three months

The Higher Council of Communication (CSC) on Monday banned Voice of America (VOA) programs for a period of three months in Burkina Faso, after the broadcast of a program likely to undermine the morale of the Burkinabe and Malian Armed Forces. In the VOA's September 19, 2024 "Washington Forum" broadcast, synchronizing with private radio station Ouaga FM, the CSC noted serious shortcomings.Indeed, speaker Bagassi Koura described the terrorist attack of September 17, 2024 in Bamako as 'courageous.'According to his analyses and taking the example of the terrorist attack of August 23, 2024 in Barsalgho in Burkina Faso, nothing is being done in terms of security by the Combatant Forces.Furthermore, in the Washington Forum program, figures are put forward as the outcome of the Barsalogho attack, without any credible reference to justify a so-called failure of the Transition authorities.According to AIB sources, it is in view of these shortcomings that the CSC decided to suspend VOA programs in Burkina Faso for a period of three months. The regulator also called on Ouaga FM radio to take responsibility, urging it to exercise greater caution and rigor in its choice of programs. The CSC has suspended all synchronization of national media with international media until further notice. As a reminder, in April 2024, the CSC suspended VOA for two weeks for relaying an HRW report accusing the Burkinabe army of abuses.Source: Burkina Information Agency
