Nahouri: The Governor of the Nazinon region, Massalado Yvette Nacoulma Sanou, presided over the installation of the Joint Commission for the Reaffirmation of the Burkina Faso-Ghana border in Pô. The ceremony marked the launch of the border reaffirmation works on Friday, June 22, with the Ghanaian Ambassador, Kenneth Akibaté, representing the Ghanaian Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, in attendance.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the Joint Commission for the Reaffirmation (CMPR) consists of 20 members, equally represented by both countries. The commission is tasked with the demarcation and reaffirmation of the territorial limits, aiming to transform the borders into gateways for exchange, peace, and shared prosperity. The preparation of the final document took place over 8 days in Pô to facilitate the commission’s mission.
Massalado Yvette Nacoulma Sanou, conveying the message of the Minister of State, Minister of Territorial Administration, emphasized the importance of demarcating and reaff
irming territorial boundaries for maintaining serenity and stability between the neighboring countries. She highlighted the complex nature of the task, noting that reaffirmation is not merely a legal exercise but a consolidation of national sovereignty.
The governor stressed the importance of expertise, rigor, and impartiality for the commission members to fulfill their responsibilities, adhering strictly to the legal frameworks binding the two nations. The reaffirmation process aims to clarify the sovereignty of each State without dividing the communities living along the approximately 583 km border.
Fidèle Gouem, the permanent secretary of the national border commission, reiterated the significance of providing clear visibility of the sovereign space of each State. Following the launch, officials conducted a symbolic restoration of a marker at Dakola, on the Burkina Faso-Ghana border.
Ghanaian Ambassador Kenneth Akibaté praised the initiative, viewing the reaffirmation as a crucial step towards better bo
rder area administration. The event saw participation from governors of various regions in both countries and customary authorities, made possible through the efforts of GIZ/PFUA, with project manager Dr. Bakary Sanou present at the ceremony.
