Ouagadougou: The Burkinabe Association of Vicenza, Padova and Verona paid tribute to Thomas Sankara, father of the Burkinabe Revolution, by commemorating the 38th anniversary of his assassination on Sunday, November 2.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the ceremony took place at the parish of S. Lazzaro in Vicenza, Italy, and gathered numerous participants under the theme: “Freedom can only be conquered through struggle.” The event revisited Thomas Sankara’s dedication to independence and social justice through an array of activities.
The program featured film and video screenings illustrating the legacy of the revolutionary leader, recitations of his notable quotes, as well as musical performances and traditional African dances. Additionally, a parade and a tasting of Burkinabe dishes allowed guests to experience the culture and traditions of Burkina Faso.
Abdoulaye Ilboudo, president of the Burkinabe association of Vicenza, stated that the event aimed to impart a strong message of dedication to freedom, justice, and self-determination to younger generations. He emphasized the importance of solidarity and collective struggle in achieving a brighter future for Africa.
Christophe Kourita Lankoande, delegate of the High Council of Burkinabe of Trevineto, highlighted that Sankara’s legacy endures. He noted that Sankara left behind the motto, the national anthem, and pan-Africanism, symbolizing a new dawn for Burkina Faso following his assassination.
Funds raised during the ceremony were directed towards supporting the presidential initiative Faso Mebo. The event was praised by community leaders for fostering cohesion within the Burkinabe diaspora in Italy while honoring a significant figure in modern African history.
The evening concluded with performances by Burkinabe artists residing in Italy, creating a vibrant and communal atmosphere to celebrate the enduring impact of Thomas Sankara’s vision.
