Sourgou: Students from the Centre A school in Sourgou, accompanied by their teachers, mobilized on Tuesday, April 7, to maintain their school garden, AIB observed. Between weeding and watering, this space is proving to be a true educational laboratory and a valuable resource for the school canteen.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the day at Centre A school begins at 6:30 a.m. with the raising of the flag, accompanied by the national anthem sung in the Moor© language. This solemn ritual is followed by a civic message from the headmaster, emphasizing patriotic values. Armed with tools, the students then proceed to their regular gardening session.
The garden at Centre A school features a variety of crops, such as cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers, sorrel, okra, and onions. Lassana Ou©draogo, a teacher and the head of the garden, explains that the space serves dual educational and nutritional purposes. It acts as a teaching tool where theoretical concepts, particularly lessons on plants, are practically applied. Additionally, the garden's produce helps enhance and diversify the school canteen menus, benefiting the children.
Despite the students' enthusiasm for gardening, the conditions are described as rudimentary, with manual watering using a watering can being particularly strenuous for the children. Mr. Ou©draogo appeals for support from well-intentioned individuals to acquire inputs, suitable equipment, and a modern irrigation system.
The initiative demonstrates that the school not only prepares students for office jobs but also equips them for working life. "Gardening is a noble activity that can provide a living. We want to offer the best possible environment for the development of these future producers," the teacher concluded.
