Coverage of White Areas: 118 Localities in Dj´r´ Covered by National Project

Gaoua: The Ministry of Digital Transition, Posts and Electronic Communications organized a regional workshop in Gaoua this Friday, focusing on the 'Zero White Zone' project. The workshop aimed to address the lack of telephone and internet networks in 750 localities across Burkina Faso, including 118 localities in the Dj´r´ region.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the meeting's primary objectives were to outline the main features of the "Zero White Zone" project, highlight its significance for socio-economic development, and seek support from regional authorities. This support is crucial for land acquisition, obtaining necessary administrative authorizations, and raising awareness among the local population.

Representing the governor, Robert Zougrouana, the regional secretary general, praised the initiative. He emphasized the strategic importance of the project, especially in the current security context, as it aims to enhance local and national development through improved digital connectivity.

The Director General of Electronic Communications, Nongobzanga Zongo, explained that the project will be implemented through tenders involving the country's three mobile phone operators. Each operator has been assigned specific localities to cover, with infrastructure deployment slated to begin in 2026.

Mr. Zongo detailed that the installation process will include setting up pylons, antennas, and other technical equipment, with a completion target by the end of 2026. The population is expected to gain access to 2G, 3G, and 4G services by then. Post-implementation, the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts (ARCEP) will oversee the quality and compliance of these services.

The workshop, funded by the Fund for Universal Access and Service (FASU) and the Project for the Acceleration of Digital Transformation (PACTDIGITAL), brought together administrative, military, and paramilitary authorities, as well as customary and religious leaders and representatives of mobile phone operators.
