The lecture is part of a series of events commemorating uMama Charlotte Maxeke’s 150th birthday. This follows the Cabinet’s earlier decision to designate 2021 as “the year of Charlotte Maxeke”. This commemoration of her life is fitting and timely, particularly in light of the problems that this country continues to face, such as the triple threat of unemployment, hunger, and inequality.
uMama Maxeke was also a woman who touched many aspects of national life, including politics, education, social progress, and, most notably, religious matters. Given the ongoing threat of Gender Based Violence, backed by patriarchy’s staying power, it would be remiss not to mention her position as a gender activist.
The lecture takes place during Africa Month which promotes Pan Africanism and African Cultural Renaissance, of which both contributes to united efforts for decolonization and regeneration of the African continent. It is regarded as a platform to promote the AU institution and its programs towards the attainment of its vision – ‘An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena’.
