Emmanuel Macron called for the creation of a Palestinian state and guaranteeing the security of Israel

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for an end to the massacre of civilians in the Gaza Strip and supported the establishment of the State of Palestine as part of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he said in a speech at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.

“It is imperative that a new phase opens in Gaza, that the weapons fall silent, that humanitarians return, that civilian populations are finally protected. The deployment of an international mission must pave the way for the realization of the two-state solution,” Macron said, adding that it was up to the UN Security Council to decide whether to send this mission. He said a peaceful settlement was possible if a Palestinian state was created and Israel received all the necessary security guarantees, mutual recognition and guarantees of common security for the entire region.

In this context, he said that it was necessary to “maintain the link” between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank in order to restore the power of
the Palestinian Authority and begin the reconstruction of the territories as soon as possible. He added that France would ensure that everything was done so that the Palestinians had a state and promised to work on this with its partners in the near future. At the same time, he did not specify when France would be ready to recognize the state. As of the end of June 2024, 147 of the 193 UN member states had recognized Palestine, but not France.

The war that “Israel is waging in Gaza has lasted too long.” “The tens of thousands of Palestinian civilian victims have no justification,” added Mr. Macron. He stressed that these deaths are “a dangerous source of hatred, of resentment that threatens and will threaten the security of all, including that of Israel.”
