Ouagadougou:The Faso Cup, traditionally centered around football, has now expanded to include 11 additional sports disciplines, with finals scheduled for October 24 and 25. This announcement was made by Valérie Badolo/Tapsoba, Director General of Sports and Recreation, during a press conference in Ouagadougou.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the inclusion of these disciplines marks a new initiative by the Ministry of Sports, Youth and Employment to promote sports that have been overshadowed by football. The first edition will feature athletics, sports for disabled people, volleyball, handball, rugby, wrestling, boxing, pétanque, karate-do, taekwondo, and cycling.
The initiative aims to diversify sporting opportunities, enhance athlete preparation, and discover new talent. It also seeks to increase the visibility of these sports, promote fair play, and strengthen social cohesion. With a budget of 100 million, this first phase could extend to other disciplines based on the outcomes and available resources.
Valérie Badolo/Tapsoba emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts from sports federations, coaches, athletes, and partners to ensure successful finals. She highlighted the need for adherence to rules, discipline, and fair play. Additionally, she urged the media to cover the event responsibly to raise awareness and showcase athletes' performances.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote youth and enhance national potential, aiming to use sport as a means of fostering cohesion, solidarity, and patriotism. The director general expressed hopes that this first edition would establish a sustainable dynamic benefiting the entire Burkinabe sports movement.
