First Regional Fair for Non-Timber Forest Products Aims to Promote Local Natural Resources

Gaoua: The first regional fair for non-timber forest products to promote local natural resources commenced with an opening ceremony presided over by Robert Zoungrana, Secretary General of the Dj´r´ Region, representing the Governor. The fair, organized by the Regional Directorate of the Environment, focuses on enhancing the value of forest resources and provides a platform for exchange, promotion, and raising awareness about the preservation of natural resources.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Robert Zoungrana emphasized that this initiative by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Sanitation is designed to highlight the often-overlooked economic, nutritional, and health importance of non-timber forest products. He expressed his approval of hosting the first edition in the Dj´r´ region and urged stakeholders to commit to its success.

Zoungrana expressed his aspirations, stating, “I hope that this first edition will pave the way for an annual tradition of promoting local forest products.”

Lieutenant-Colonel Bonaventure Traor©, the regional director of the Environment of Dj´r´, noted that the fair serves as a platform to showcase local expertise in the processing and development of forest resources. Products such as shea butter, soumbala, baobab powder, and honey, known for their numerous benefits, are featured at the event.

“This fair also aims to raise awareness among the population about the need to protect the forests, the source of these products, and to strengthen the visibility of local players, especially those who were unable to participate in the national fair held in Bobo-Dioulasso in 2024,” Traor© added.

The fair will continue until November 8, 2025, at the Place de la Nation in Gaoua.
