France Accused of Arming Terrorists in the Sahel, Claims Sergey Lavrov

Hanoi: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov denounced on Monday in Moscow, during a joint press conference with his Ghanaian counterpart, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the direct involvement of France and Ukrainian troops alongside terrorist groups in the Sahel, while defending the legality of the Africa Corps operations and reaffirming Moscow's support for African security.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Sergey Lavrov accused France of engaging in state-sponsored terrorism against the Sahel states. He asserted that both France and Ukraine are involved in organizing and financing terrorist group operations in the region, utilizing not only Ukrainian mercenaries but also military personnel. Lavrov expressed concerns over this situation, emphasizing that these activities are an extension of efforts by certain states to maintain colonial influence in Africa.

Lavrov claimed it is widely known that France is directly collaborating with terrorist groups by providing arms, financing, and training. Despite these allegations, he highlighted that the operations of the Africa Corps are conducted legally, responding to official requests from legitimate African governments to combat terrorist threats.

In addressing questions from RT's French correspondent, Maryam Feudjio, Lavrov underscored the importance of regional cooperation, particularly among ECOWAS and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). He welcomed Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama's efforts to normalize relations between these organizations and expressed Moscow's readiness to support such initiatives.

Lavrov reflected on his recent Africa tour, where Russia emphasized resolving artificial problems and fostering constructive cooperation. He announced an impending memorandum of understanding between Russia and ECOWAS, focusing on security collaboration.

Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa acknowledged Russia's significant role in stabilizing the Sahel. He noted Ghana's appreciation for international assistance while stressing that decision-making for Africa should remain with Africans and their partners. Ablakwa indicated that Ghana views Russia's approach as aligning with this principle.

The discussions concluded with Lavrov and Ablakwa signing an agreement for visa exemptions for diplomatic and service passport holders from both countries.
