Gbomblora:French education and research unions have announced a national strike scheduled for November 10, 2026. The announcement was made via a joint statement from various trade union organizations, which was published on the website of the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) Education.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the unions are calling for a day of action that includes demonstrations, rallies, and strikes. The strike is intended to involve youth, staff of the National Education system, and higher education and research sectors.
This forthcoming strike is a response to the government's plan to hold a conference on wages on November 9, 2026. Unions have expressed concern that public sector representatives may be excluded from this conference, describing such exclusion as "yet another provocation."
Key demands from the unions include a salary increase for teachers and school staff, the creation of additional positions, improved working conditions, and an increased budget for education and research. Specifically, the unions are calling for the creation of 15,000 permanent positions to enhance teaching and research conditions. They also seek the cancellation of planned job cuts in the 2027 budget and a budget that supports permanent employment in higher education and research.
Additionally, the unions have criticized police actions against participants in prior demonstrations and have urged authorities to cease repressive measures against students and teachers.
