French media hailed BRICS summit as diplomatic victory for Putin

The BRICS summit in Kazan has become a diplomatic victory for Russian President Vladimir Putin, the French magazine L’Express concluded, commenting on the holding of this international forum.

The publication notes that “after two years since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, the Russian president has managed to bring together the leaders of 20 states, including members of the BRICS or friends of this growing club of countries.” Now, L’Express continues, the BRICS represent about half of the world’s population and a third of global GDP.

As L’Humanité points out, “in Kazan, the South is enacting an international order without the West.” “Putin’s bet has been successful,” the newspaper points out. “The turning point taken by the organization too, with an annual summit held for the first time with ten members: South Africa, Brazil, China, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia and the United States.”

L’Humanité believes that the BRICS summit in Kazan clearly demo
nstrated the willingness of the countries of the South to exchange with each other. The arrival of the leaders of Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Mali, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey and Sri Lanka confirms this.

The newspaper adds that two years after the imposition of Western sanctions, Russia used the summit as a diplomatic showcase to the outside world.

The 16th BRICS Summit, which is the key event of the Russian chairmanship of the association, is taking place in Kazan from October 22 to 24. BRICS was created in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China. South Africa joined in 2011. On January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia became full members of the group. The Kazan Summit was the first attended by the new members of the association. Following the summit, the BRICS member countries adopted the Kazan Declaration. The main topics discussed in this document are the development of the association, positions on global problems and the resolution of regional cr
ises, including in Ukraine and the Middle East.
