Gaongo Municipality Celebrates International Mother Language Day and African Languages Week

Gaongo: International Mother Language Day (IMLD) was celebrated this Friday, February 27, 2026, in the Basic Education District of the Gaongo commune, Baz¨ga province. This day also marks the beginning of African Languages Week.

According to Burkina Information Agency, International Mother Language Day (IMLD) was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism worldwide. In the Gaongo Basic Education District (CEB), the day began with the raising of the national flag, marked by the performance of the national anthem in the Moor© language, symbolizing the value placed on Burkina Faso's national languages.

The Kombougo school served as the venue for the commemorative activities. Youssouf Bassia, head of the Gaongo CEB, began his address by emphasizing the importance of this day, which celebrates mother tongues. He then thanked everyone for their presence and encouraged active participation.

Souleymane Tiendrebeogo, the cultural officer at the Gaongo CEB, led the educational discussions. Tales, proverbs, riddles, and instructive exchanges in the mother tongue (Moor©) punctuated the celebration. Each participant spoke in the Mor© language, illustrating the richness and vitality of Burkina Faso's linguistic heritage.

This day was a moment of conviviality, sharing, and returning to our roots, reaffirming the importance of promoting and preserving national languages.
