Giant Oba Head Sculpture Unveiled in Koudougou

Koudougou:A giant Oba head sculpture has been unveiled in Koudougou, crafted by Salfo Derm, a sculptor from Nando. This impressive work was discovered by the Regional Directorate of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism of Nando (DRCCAT-Nando).

According to Burkina Information Agency, the sculpture is a life-size reproduction of an Oba head made entirely of bronze. It draws inspiration from the commemorative sculptures of the rulers of the Kingdom of Benin, located in present-day Nigeria. These sculptures hold significant value in African artistic heritage and international museum collections.

The monumental piece stands approximately 5.75 meters tall, with a base diameter of 2.14 meters, and was constructed using nearly 3 tons of bronze. The creation of this work spanned one year and six months, involving extensive research and craftsmanship.

Salfo Derm's sculpture offers an interpretation of an iconic figure from the artistic history of the Kingdom of Benin. The DRCCAT-Nando views this unveiling as a chance to showcase the expertise of the region's cultural contributors and initiatives that enhance its artistic and cultural presence.

The sculpture will be featured at the Ouagadougou International Arts and Crafts Fair (SIAO), which is scheduled to take place from October 30 to November 8, 2026, in Ouagadougou.
