Zondoma: The Gourcy health district has been awarded the title of best health district in the country for 2025 in the fight against malaria by the Ministry of Health. The award ceremony took place on May 22, 2026, in Tenkodogo, during the belated celebration of World Malaria Day.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Dr. Constantin Bationo Bassana, the Chief Medical Officer of the Gourcy Health District, and his team were recognized for their efforts in combating malaria in 2025. The team received a trophy and certificate of recognition from the Ministry of Health.

This recognition is seen by Dr. Bationo as acknowledgment of the commitment of the district’s health workers. They have implemented strategies recommended by the Permanent Secretariat for the Fight Against Malaria. These include the free distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets, destruction of larval habitats, seasonal malaria chemoprevention, vaccination for children, and case management.

Dr. Bationo emphasized the importance of coordinated team efforts in achieving these results. He expressed humility in accepting the title and urged his colleagues to continue working in cohesion and complementarity to eliminate malaria by 2030 as per the government’s vision.

He also called on the public to contribute by adhering to specialists’ instructions. The award was presented during a flag-raising ceremony on June 8, 2026, at the provincial police headquarters in Gourcy.

The Gourcy health district serves a population of approximately 291,671 with 42 Health and Social Promotion Centers, a Medical Center with a surgical unit, and a private community medical center. Since its creation in 2002, this is the first national distinction received by the district, which now aims to maintain its excellence.
