Gourma: 150 young people armed against fake news

The Center for Democratic Governance (CGD), in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), initiated, on Thursday, August 22, 2024, a framework for discussions called "Inclusive Dialogue on Disinformation: How to Get Out of the Disinformation Impasse?", for the benefit of 150 young people.Disinformation has increased with the proliferation of new information and communication tools.Faced with this worrying phenomenon, the Center for Democratic Governance (CGD) organized, on August 22, 2024, a framework for exchanges entitled "Inclusive dialogue on disinformation: how to get out of the impasse of disinformation?", for 150 young people.Coming from the world of associations and the media, the participants followed closely two communications on the phenomenon.Through themes such as 'The main threads of disinformation in Burkina Faso, current status and scope' and 'Disinformation in Burkina Faso: techniques for combating disinformation and fake news', the communicator s analyzed the issues related to this phenomenon. In addition, the fifty or so participants practiced fact-checking, a new journalistic style which consists of verifying the accuracy, authenticity and relevance of information conveyed, particularly by public figures. For the president of the United Nations Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) club of Fada N'Gourma, Hamtandi Elysé Ouoba, this process that he was unfamiliar with will now allow him to distinguish true information from false.Following him, the president of the Eastern Regional Youth Council, Fimba Ouoba, noted that disinformation disorients young people, creates tensions and contributes to tearing the social fabric. He also felt that this "inclusive dialogue" comes at the right time, because, according to him, it will allow young people to "sort things out between the multiple pieces of information poured out daily on the web."For Aimé Fabrice Bazié, it is precisely to train this section of the population to become "enlightened co nsumers" of information that the CGD initiated this "inclusive dialogue" with the technical and financial support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Inclusive Governance for Resilience (IGR) project. A project implemented by the NGO Creative Associates International.Source: Burkina Information Agency
