Gourma Province Hosts Workshop on Enhancing Solid Waste Management

Fada n'gourma: A capacity building workshop on solid waste management commenced in Fada N'Gourma, inaugurated by Silas Nacanabo, the High Commissioner of Gourma province. The initiative is overseen by the provincial directorate of water and environmental sanitation of Gourma.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Desire Sare, the provincial director responsible for sanitation in Gourma, highlighted the town's challenge with waste management, revealing that households produce various types of waste, much of which is discarded in public spaces. Sare emphasized that such waste management practices contribute to the spread of diseases, further noting the limited visibility and impact of hygiene and sanitation associations in the area.

High Commissioner Silas Nacanabo expressed appreciation for the cooperative efforts between provincial management and local authorities in addressing waste management issues. He underscored the health risks, pollution, and environmental degradation resulting from inadequate waste management practices.

The workshop spans three days, during which participants will undergo training on several important aspects of solid waste management. These include the general principles of solid waste management, the regulatory and institutional policy framework of Burkina Faso, and the decree governing the collection, storage, transport, treatment, and disposal of urban waste. The training will particularly emphasize the stages of pre-collection, collection, and transportation of solid waste.

Silas Nacanabo urged all stakeholders to engage actively in the discussions and to utilize the knowledge gained to become effective agents of change within their communities.
