Governor of Central Region Calls for Blood Donations Amidst Shortage

Ouagadougou: The governor of the Central region, Abdoulaye Bassinga, has called upon the residents of his jurisdiction to donate blood to help save lives. Speaking on Friday in Ouagadougou, Bassinga urged the people of the Central region to embrace their patriotic duty and contribute to this essential cause.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Abdoulaye Bassinga emphasized the unique nature of blood as a life-saving resource, noting that it cannot be sourced from pharmacies but is instead a precious gift found within individuals. He highlighted the critical need for blood donations to support the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) and volunteers for the defense of the homeland (VDP), many of whom are in dire need of blood due to their engagements in ongoing operations.

The governor's appeal coincided with a blood collection event held on May 30, 2025, in Ouagadougou, organized to benefit the FDS and VDP. This event was part of the 3rd edition of the Regional Week of Living Together in the Centre (SRV-C), which ran from April 3 to May 31. The theme for this year's edition was "Civicism and community dialogue: Foundations of sustainable social cohesion in the Centre region."

Marguetou Derra/Man©, head of the blood collection department at the National Blood Transfusion Centre (CNTS), stated that the aim was to collect at least 100 blood bags during this drive. She pointed out the current shortage at the CNTS, where the demand for blood products stands at 300 bags against a pool of around sixty regular donors.

To address this gap, she explained the necessity of conducting outreach efforts, such as the one held at the Governorate, to encourage more people to donate and meet the pressing demand for blood products.
