Bourasso:Farmers in the Bourasso commune are grappling with significant challenges as grain-eating birds ravage cereal crops across several villages. This new threat comes on the heels of a challenging agricultural season marked by delayed and poorly distributed rainfall, followed by an early cessation of rains.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the villages affected include Bourasso, Sikoro, Kamiankoro, and Kodougou, where fields have been observed to suffer extensive damage from these birds. Millet crops, in particular, are being targeted even before reaching maturity.
This situation exacerbates the difficulties faced by farmers who were already struggling due to unfavorable weather conditions. Many farmers are spending significant time in their fields attempting to safeguard their crops from these avian invaders.
The local communities are deeply concerned about potential crop losses and the resulting impact on household food security. Joel Coulibaly, a farmer in Kamiankoro, reports that one hectare of his millet crop has already been devastated. Similar concerns are echoed by Blaise Traoré in Sikoro, who notes that premature harvesting is becoming necessary, leading to substantial losses.
Farmers in Bourasso are urgently calling on authorities to implement measures to mitigate the impact of granivorous birds and protect their agricultural yields.
