High Demand for AES Biometric Identity Cards at ONI Stand During SIAO 2026

Ouagadougou:At the 18th edition of the International Arts and Crafts Fair of Ouagadougou (SIAO), a significant number of individuals, including young people, women, and men, are visiting the stand of the National Identification Office (ONI) to obtain their AES biometric identity cards. The stand is strategically positioned near the Soleil Levant pavilion to facilitate access for attendees.

According to Agence d'Information du Burkina, the ONI stand has been operational since the official opening day of SIAO on October 31, 2026, and has seen a steadily increasing demand. This surge is attributed to a government decision to replace the national identity card with the AES identity card, explained Chief Warrant Officer Valentin Kaboré, who is serving at the ONI.

Under a specially set-up tent, applicants with their personal documents wait in line for their turn. Three ONI agents manage the initial procedures, while another line forms for photographs and subsequent steps in the process. The initiative at SIAO aims to bring identification services closer to the public, with additional enrollment centers available across Ouagadougou's districts.

Kaboré emphasized the importance of the identity card as a mandatory document that the ONI is tasked with issuing to applicants. Enrollment agent Falimata Congo, who also serves as a secretary at ONI, confirmed the high turnout since the operation began, estimating that around 300 people had been registered by November 2.

Despite the high demand, some challenges have arisen due to incomplete applications presented by some individuals. Agents at the stand provide guidance on the necessary documents required to complete the formalities. Among the applicants, Adama Diallo praised the ONI's initiative, highlighting its efficiency compared to traditional processes at police stations, which often take more time.
