Ioba: The Water and Forestry Combat Unit (UCEF) of Djikologo conducted patrols called "Operation RATEL 1" in the Bontioli classified forest during the first week of February 2026 to combat illegal gold mining and other illegal activities, AIB observed on site.
According to Burkina Information Agency, this operation, led by Commander Ratel, was carried out with the support of the Djikologo forestry post. The Bontioli classified forest is a protected nature reserve that stretches from the Ioba province to Poni, crossing the Bougouriba River. All human activity is prohibited within its boundaries.
Commander Ratel highlighted that some individuals, disregarding all regulations concerning the protection of classified forests and despite awareness campaigns, have entered the forest to conduct illegal artisanal gold mining. "They have devastated a large part of this forest by digging large holes and cutting down trees in search of gold," he lamented. "Even the trees planted as part of the reforestation effort have all been uprooted," he continued.
Indeed, gaping holes have replaced the trees across dozens of hectares, sometimes even reaching the banks of the Bougouriba River. "That's why we launched Operation RATEL 1 to clear the Bontioli classified forest. Ensuring the safety of the population and the forests is part of our mission," emphasized Commander RATEL.
The UCEF personnel, divided into teams on motorcycles and in pickup trucks, led by their commander, scoured the forest in pursuit of the gold miners. A chase ensued between the UCEF and the gold prospectors, who were caught off guard by the operation. Warning shots were fired at times to force these fleeing destroyers of the forest to surrender.
Some abandoned their motorcycles, containers, and various mining equipment and tools. As the phenomenon has persisted, the illegal gold miners do not appear willing to put an end to this devastating activity.
The operation will continue until the classified forest of Bontioli is completely cleared, Commander Ratel indicated.
