Ioba tradition: Rituals and a customary ceremony to commemorate the day of customs and traditions

The chiefdom of Dano organized sacrifices and a customary ceremony for the celebration of the day of customs and traditions (JCT) chaired by the chief of the canton, His Majesty Naonfa 2, this Wednesday, May 15 2024 at the sacred hill of Dano.

The first edition of the day of customs and traditions (JCT) was celebrated in Dano by the customary chiefdom. As was to be expected, this day’s activities began with rituals. Early this morning, sacrifices of chickens, sheep and goats were carried out at the sacred hill of Dano located opposite the national police station.

The canton chief, Naonfa 2, assisted by the land chief and other notables, are the first to sacrifice their chicken. They invoked the manes of their ancestors for the return of peace to Burkina. They also prayed for security, the consolidation of social cohesion, solidarity and living together between the different communities in the province of Ioba. Holders of traditional knowledge expressed blessings for the head of state, Captain Ibrahim Traoré
and members of the government. After these customary authorities, it was the turn of the population.

Anyone with a particular need or an offering to make to the ancestors had the opportunity to bring their poultry or animal to sacrifice. At the beginning of the evening, a ceremony was organized. The high commissioner of Ioba province, Bernadette Adenyo / Sermé took part in this ceremony. She was accompanied by a large delegation. We also note the presence of representatives of the Muslim community, the federation of evangelical churches and missions and living communities in Dano.

His Majesty Naonfa 2 welcomed the issuance of this decree establishing JCT on May 15 of each year in Burkina Faso by the president of the transition and his government. The canton chief thanked the provincial and municipal authorities for their effective presence at this JCT commemorative ceremony.

He said he was satisfied with the progress of the rituals for the safeguarding of peace in Dano and understanding between the differe
nt layers of society. The first head of the Ioba province, Bernadette Adenyo née Sermé, said she came to greet the customs on the occasion of the JCT celebration. She thanked them for responding to the head of state’s call. This day is held in heritage month, she added. This must be an invitation for each of us to recharge our batteries and see the acts that we still need to magnify such as solidarity, respect for elders and unity, continued the High Commissioner. ‘As Burkinabé, we must contribute to the return of peace to our country,’ underlined Ms. Adenyo. She invited the elderly to further train the youth on the values ??that make up dagara, Samo or senoufo. ‘It is through unity that we will get Burkina Faso out of the rut,’ she concluded. The chief of Dano canton, Naonfa 2 and his notables shared a meal with the administrative authorities and guests.
