Ouagadougou: A joint mission composed of the General Directorate of Territorial Development (DGDT), the Technical Secretariat of the Peacebuilding Fund (ST-PBF), United Nations agencies, and implementing NGOs conducted an on-site evaluation of projects in the Gourma region. This visit provided an opportunity to engage with stakeholders and beneficiaries of initiatives financed by the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF).
According to Burkina Information Agency, Burkina Faso became eligible for PBF resources in 2018 to implement projects that enhance trust between citizens and the government, bolster social resilience, and promote the involvement of women and youth in peaceful conflict resolution. The PBF's Technical Monitoring Committee (CTS) conducts strategic monitoring and supervision missions twice a year to evaluate project progress and impact, as well as to identify challenges and prospects for future implementation.
Monique P. Ou©draogo ©pouse Yarga, government representative, noted that the field visit helped identify successful initiatives for resilience and social cohesion, as well as challenges hindering project implementation. Among the projects assessed were biodigesters, market gardening sites, boreholes, and a cattle fattening facility, all contributing to social resilience and the active participation of women and youth in the Gourma region.
Mr. Alain Dianou of OCADES-Fada, an implementing partner, emphasized that the infrastructure and biodigesters are part of the "Project for the Prevention and Management of Conflicts in the Eastern Region (PREGEC)." These efforts facilitate rational natural resource management, contributing to peacebuilding.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the training, financing, and economic activities support provided through the government and United Nations partnership. Mrs. Balkissa Barry, a beneficiary, highlighted the assistance she received, including sheep and animal feed, which will help meet her family's basic needs, while also requesting additional veterinary support and infrastructure for her sheep fattening business.
Mr. Samtoala Sawadogo, secretary of the Village Observatory for Conflict Prevention and Management (OVIPREGEC) in Koar©, welcomed the visit, noting that it allowed partners to witness the activities and their impact firsthand. He highlighted the peaceful conflict management facilitated by OVIPREGEC, particularly for land and farmer-herder disputes, and called for additional support to enhance monitoring and reporting capabilities.
Ms. Assa Lido shared her positive experience with the biodigesters, which eliminated her need to purchase coal or gas, enabling her to save money for her family's dietary needs.
The PBF operates across 57 municipalities in 12 regions of Burkina Faso, focusing on areas such as security sector reform, national reconciliation, national unity building, and strengthening social resilience, with an emphasis on the participation of women and youth.
