Kiaka SA Implements Successful Resettlement Model for Mining-Affected Populations

Boulgou: The High Commissioner of the Boulgou province, Dom¨gb¨gui¨re Constantin Dabire, presided over the official handover ceremony of modern housing to 113 households, affecting around 900 individuals impacted by the Kiaka mining project. The event, attended by Oumar Barro, the National Director of KIAKA SA, saw significant investment in resettlement sites at Bassindengo and Guilaweogo, totaling 1.19 billion FCFA.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the village of Bassindengo, near Niaogho, was the backdrop for the ceremony, marking a significant phase in the resettlement initiative for those affected by the Kiaka mine project. The mining activities, while economically beneficial, posed challenges like loss of farmland and homes, prompting KIAKA SA to craft a resettlement program that is participatory and respectful of local communities' rights.

The resettlement efforts provided modern housing with amenities including kitchens, latrines, and fenced concessions, ensuring security and privacy for the residents. The housing units varied to meet different household needs, comprising different types such as F1T1, F1T2, F3T1, and F4T1.

Oumar Barro, National Director of KIAKA SA, emphasized the program's goal to offer better living conditions, rebuild sustainably, and preserve the dignity of those affected. The housing investment amounted to 701,728,698 FCFA for Bassindengo and 495,399,100 FCFA for Guilaweogo, underscoring the company's commitment to sustainable development and community welfare.

In addition to housing, KIAKA SA invested in social infrastructure, including a well for clean water and improved roads. Education received significant focus, with a new six-classroom school in Guilaweogo and expanded facilities in Bassindengo, totaling 185,856,237 FCFA excluding taxes. These educational establishments are equipped with necessary amenities and photovoltaic panels for lighting.

Plans are also underway for a Health and Social Promotion Centre (CSPS) to enhance access to basic social services. The High Commissioner, Dom¨gb¨gui¨re Constantin Dabire, commended the quality of the projects and the collaborative spirit involved, urging beneficiaries to maintain these assets.

Local authorities expressed satisfaction but also highlighted the need for improved road access and strengthened social services. The handover of the Bassindengo housing units marks a significant milestone in the Kiaka mining project, demonstrating a people-centered development approach.

Through this initiative, KIAKA SA has provided affected populations with a modern, secure living environment and essential social infrastructure, fostering sustainable development and harmonious coexistence in Boulgou province. The Kiaka mine site spans several communes in the Boulgou and Zoundweogo provinces, covering regions critical to the project's success.
