Ouagadougou: The municipality of Koubri proceeded on Saturday with the official installation of its Environmental and Eco-citizen Cell (CECO), a government initiative aimed at strengthening local environmental governance and promoting citizen engagement in favor of protecting the living environment.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the ceremony, held in the hall of the new town hall, was presided over by the president of the Special Delegation (PDS) of Koubri, Comrade Samade Leonard Gougou, in the presence of civil society leaders, administrative officials, and representatives of civil society organizations. This initiative is part of the dynamic driven by the highest authorities of Burkina Faso to make environmental preservation and eco-citizenship essential levers for sustainable development and collective well-being.
Composed of around twenty members from different sectors of activity in the municipality, the CECO is responsible for raising awareness among the population about good environmental practices and promoting sanitation actions, reforestation, responsible waste management, as well as the protection of natural resources and municipal heritage. It also aims to be a permanent framework for consultation and coordinated action to build a cleaner, greener, and more resilient community in the face of environmental challenges.
In his address, the president of the Special Delegation praised the vision of the national authorities, who place the environment at the heart of development and responsible citizenship. He invited the members of the cell to demonstrate patriotism, resilience, volunteerism, and commitment in order to make Koubri a benchmark in environmental protection and sanitation. "Preserving our living environment is a patriotic duty and a collective responsibility that calls upon every citizen," he argued, urging people to support community initiatives for a healthy environment.
The ceremony is part of the Environment and Eco-citizenship Week (SECO), scheduled from June 27 to July 4, 2026, during which several activities will be carried out in the municipality. The program includes landscaping around the prefecture's flagpole on June 30th, followed by the clearing of gutters on July 1st, led by the Wayiyyan community watch group. July 2nd will be dedicated to a cleanup day at the market in sector 4, organized by the departmental women's coordination committee, while a reforestation project in the green space near the Livestock Department is scheduled for July 3rd, supervised by the administration.
Through this initiative, the municipality of Koubri reaffirms its commitment to making ecological citizenship a pillar of local development and to sustainably embedding the values of solidarity, responsibility, and patriotism at the heart of community actions.
