Ouagadougou: The Environmental and Eco-citizenship Unit (CECO) of the municipality of Leo officially launched its activities for the Environment and Eco-citizenship Week (SECO) on Monday, June 29, 2026, in Leo. Established on June 27, this structure, with 20 members, intends to mobilize the local population around strong actions for sanitation and reforestation.
According to Burkina Information Agency, placed under the chairmanship and direct responsibility of the President of the Special Delegation (PDS) of Leo, Kassoum Koalaga, the CECO was established in the town hall's conference room. Composed of 20 members, this new unit's main missions are to coordinate environmental preservation efforts, organize clean-up campaigns, reforestation and landscaping projects, while also conducting environmental education activities. It will also be responsible for mobilizing local stakeholders (schools, civil society organizations, the private sector, traditional and religious leaders) and monitoring the results on the ground.
According to the President of the Special Delegation, Kassoum Koalaga, "this unit constitutes the essential foundation for internalizing and permanently instilling the spirit and habit of environmental preservation within the municipality." To translate this vision into action, the CECO has implemented an intensive program of activities for the week.
The program began on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, with an awareness day for households and private sector stakeholders on waste management, combined with a radio broadcast on Tampani radio starting at 2 p.m. Simultaneously, gutter cleaning operations, involving local businesses and residents, were launched and will continue until July 4.
The green component of the program will be marked on Thursday, July 2, 2026, starting at 6:30 a.m., by the reforestation of the regional forest. Finally, the week will conclude on Saturday, July 4, with a major cleanup day at the central market in Leo and the surrounding area, with a meeting point in front of the town hall at 6:30 a.m.
Faced with the environmental challenges facing the municipality, Kassoum Koalaga made a solemn appeal to all residents within his jurisdiction. The mayor invited them to "actively participate in these various activities in order to contribute to improving the collective living environment." He concluded by urging citizens to work together to make Leo a cleaner, greener, and more resilient municipality.
