Madi Sakandé Emphasizes Importance of Cold Chain for Burkina Faso’s Industrialization

Ouagadougou:Burkina Faso Refrigeration and air conditioning expert Madi Sakandé has highlighted the critical role of mastering the cold chain in driving industrialization and development in Burkina Faso. Speaking at a training session on reducing energy consumption in refrigeration equipment for the staff of the Burkina Information Agency, Sakandé stressed that effective management of the cold chain is crucial in a country where agriculture and livestock farming engage nearly 80% of the population.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Sakandé emphasized that Burkina Faso must gain full control over its cold chain and air conditioning systems to preserve agricultural, forestry, and livestock products and withstand challenging periods. He sees this as essential for launching any significant industrialization efforts.

Sakandé shared his expertise on energy efficiency, advising participants to consider the long-term energy consumption of appliances rather than just the initial cost. He advocates for energy-efficient practices, including a ban on air conditioners without Inverter technology, which he claims exacerbate Africa's energy deficit.

He also provided guidance on responsible consumption, advising against setting air conditioners below 24 degrees Celsius. Sakandé believes that appropriate cooling equipment is necessary, not a luxury, and recommends consulting specialists before installations. He also suggests involving architects in integrating cooling needs from the design phase of buildings.

Sakandé pointed out the lack of cold storage facilities in markets and yards, stressing the need for separate storage for fruits, vegetables, meat, and fish to maintain public health. He expressed concern about the unhygienic transportation of meat in open conditions over long distances.

With 25 years of experience in refrigeration and air conditioning, Sakandé is the president of the Union of African Associations of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Actors and founder of New Cold System in Italy. He also established a refrigeration training center in Ouagadougou in 2026 in partnership with Centro Studi Galileo. Through New Cold Akademy, he offers training courses, including free spots for Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland.
