Iolonioro: More than 1,100 plants are expected for the “Patriotic Hour to Green Burkina Faso” operation. The actors of the commune of Iolonioro mobilized on Friday in preparation for the national reforestation operation scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. throughout the national territory.
According to Burkina Information Agency, an awareness and mobilization meeting was held in the reception hall of the Iolonioro town hall under the chairmanship of the President of the Special Delegation (PDS), Joachin Konkobo. The meeting was attended by officials from decentralized state services, associations, religious leaders, development partners, and Village Development Advisors (VDCs).
The objective was to inform participants about the organization of the 8th edition of the National Tree Day and invite them to participate massively to contribute to the success of this initiative to combat the degradation of vegetation cover, desertification, and the effects of climate change.
According to the head of the Iolonioro Departmental Water and Forestry Service, Lieutenant Ferdinand Tindano of Water and Forestry, the distinctive feature of the 2026 edition lies in the direct involvement of households through the concept “My concession, my tree,” which encourages each family to plant and maintain trees in their own concession. He explained that planting targets have been set for different segments of society to contribute to achieving national reforestation goals.
To support this operation, the municipality provided 1,100 plants of various species free of charge. These included 1,000 plants donated by the promoter of the establishment, Tegwende Ouedraogo, Dramane Abdoul Ouedraogo, 40 plants made available by the Iolonioro Departmental Water and Forestry Service, and 60 plants provided by the State for the benefit of vulnerable people.
Speaking at the event, donor Dramane Abdoul Ouedraogo praised the government initiative to re-green Burkina Faso. He stated that it is the duty of every citizen to support the efforts of the state and local authorities to restore vegetation cover, before urging beneficiaries to ensure proper maintenance of the plants.
The Water and Forestry agents then presented to the participants the appropriate techniques for planting and maintaining the seedlings to optimize their survival rate. The meeting concluded with the removal of the seedlings from the garden of the departmental Water and Forestry service. The species distributed include moringa, baobab, neem, cashew, papaya, eucalyptus, and mahogany.
In total, more than 1,100 plants are expected to be planted on Saturday, June 20, 2026, in the villages and sectors of the commune of Iolonioro, as part of the national initiative “Patriotic Hour to Green Up Faso.”
