Ouagadougou: A new 26.4 MW thermal power plant has been commissioned to strengthen the electricity production capacity of Bobo 2. The Minister of Energy and Quarries, Yacouba Zabre Gouba, inaugurated the plant in the Lafiabougou district of Bobo-Dioulasso, enhancing the electricity production capacity from 60 MW to 86.4 MW.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Minister Yacouba Zabre Gouba emphasized that the new power plant represents "a victory" for the region. He stated, "Today is a significant day, carrying a powerful symbol; we are not simply inaugurating machines, we are celebrating a great victory for our economy, our sovereignty, and above all, our development." The plant's completion demonstrates Burkina Faso's ability to finance and execute major infrastructure projects independently, with a total investment of over 33 billion CFA francs sourced domestically.
The minister detailed that the power plant comprises three substantial engines, collectively generating 26.4 megawatts. This addition will help reduce power outages and provide a more stable electricity supply to the industrial and economic sectors of the Guiriko region. He highlighted the alignment of this infrastructure with the vision of President of Faso, Comrade Captain Ibrahim Traore, who prioritizes energy sovereignty as a critical component of the country's economic transformation.
The inauguration of the new plant follows the commissioning of the Pabre thermal power plant on July 21, 2026, and precedes the planned commissioning of two additional 25 MW plants in Koudougou and Kaya. These efforts aim to further bolster national electricity production capacities.
Minister Gouba acknowledged the contributions of SONABEL, the National Bureau of Major Projects, and various stakeholders, including engineers, technicians, and workers, in the successful completion of the project. He also expressed appreciation for the support from local administrative, military, traditional, and religious authorities, alongside the residents of Bobo-Dioulasso.
In addressing SONABEL officials, the minister underscored the importance of rigorous management to ensure the sustainability and optimization of the state's investment. He highlighted that this power plant is a valuable national asset, necessitating meticulous operation and maintenance.
The Director General of SONABEL, Comrade Souleymane Ouedraogo, conveyed his gratitude to Comrade Captain Ibrahim Traore, President of Faso, the Minister in charge of Energy, and the entire Government for their dedication and support in realizing this crucial energy infrastructure.
