Niger ends military counter-terrorism agreement with the European Union

Ouagadougou, December 5, 2023 (AIB) – Niger has just denounced UCAP Sahel, a training and support agreement from the European Union in the fight against terrorism in the Sahel, according to the Niger Press Agency.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a letter published this Monday, December 4, 2023, informed the representation of the European Union in Niamey of the denunciation by the State of Niger of the agreement between the Republic of Niger and the Union European Union on the status of the EUCAP Sahel mission in the country, thus putting an end to the military partnership between the EU and Niger in the fight against terrorism,” reports the ANP.

This denunciation was made “in accordance with the agreement document and six months’ notice,” wrote the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Niger according to the Nigerien press agency.

The Niger authorities also canceled the privileges and immunities enjoyed by the personnel of the EU Military Partnership Mission (EUMPM), “in accordance with general international law and the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties between States and international organizations or between international organizations of March 1986.

» Launched in 2012 to provide technical and material support to Niger’s fighting forces engaged in the fight against terrorism, the European Union mission must completely pack up in six months at the latest.

On November 28, Niger had already canceled a Niger-European agreement to combat African migrants heading towards Europe, by repealing an anti-migratory law passed in 2015, “under the influence of certain foreign powers”. in the opinion of the new authorities in Niamey.

In the crisis arising from the overthrow of Mohamed Bazoum, the European Union, which has still not recognized the authority of General Tiani, supported the position of ECOWAS and France which considered waging a war against Niger in order to to reinstate the deposed president to power .
