Ouagadougou: Five streets and avenues in the Burkinabe capital were named by municipal authorities in tribute to five companions of the father of the Burkinabe Revolution, Captain Thomas Sankara, who was assassinated on October 15, 1987.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Ralegwinde Christophe Saba, Wallilaye Ouedraogo, Patenema Sore, Bonaventure Kompaore, and Frederic Gannoaga Kiemde are among the twelve companions of President Sankara who were immortalized on May 19, 2024, in the streets and avenues of district 11 of Ouagadougou. The municipal authorities confirmed that the initiative of renaming the streets is part of a broader effort to preserve the memory of these martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the dignity of the Burkinabe people.
Relatives of the deceased attended the ceremonies unveiling the plaques and expressed their gratitude to the authorities. A relative of Christophe Saba remarked, "Christophe is immortal not only because he has children but also because he now has an avenue."
The president of the International Committee of the Thomas Sankara Memorial, Colonel Major Daouda Traore, commented on the importance of the initiative, stating that the authorities' actions demonstrate that anyone, regardless of their background, can earn recognition from their country through faith and courage. He described Comrade Kiemde Frederic as a distinguished lawyer, while Bonaventure Kompaore was a trusted advisor to the Head of State.
