Poa: The weekly market in the commune of Poa saw a large influx of people from surrounding villages this Saturday, particularly around the sale of vegetables, AIB observed.
According to Burkina Information Agency, several market garden products were offered to customers on the stalls, including cabbage, tomatoes, eggplant, onions, and chili peppers, among others. These products constitute an essential source of food for households and a means of subsistence for many women traders.
Some vendors noted that the market is gradually changing. "The market is moving very slowly, but we are still managing to sell our products," one vendor confided.
Regarding the origin of the products, it appears that the vegetables come from both local production and neighboring areas. The cabbages, for example, come from the village of Saria, located about 12 kilometers from Poa, where traders go to buy supplies before returning to sell at the market.
On the other hand, tomatoes and eggplants are mostly produced in the commune of Poa and sold on market day. The situation is somewhat different for onions. Safiata Ou©draogo, a trader, explains that she sources them from the commune of Kokologho to resell in Poa. "With the cost of transport, it's not easy, but despite everything I manage to make ends meet," she emphasizes, while acknowledging that some customers find the onions relatively expensive.
The market women also mentioned the difficulties linked to the lack of water, which is hindering the development of local market gardening. However, they stated that they are available and motivated to produce more vegetables in the town if the necessary conditions are met.
The fruit and vegetable sector thus remains an important pillar of the Poa market, contributing to the dynamism of the local economy and the improvement of the living conditions of the population.
