Accra:President Ibrahim Traore has emphasized his ongoing commitment to achieving full sovereignty for Burkina Faso, continuing the legacy of former President Thomas Sankara. This commitment was articulated during a speech read by Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo on the 39th anniversary of October 15, 1987, a date commemorated annually in tribute to Sankara and his companions.
According to Burkina Information Agency, President Traore highlighted the significance of October 15 as a day to reaffirm hope and begin the journey toward liberation, rather than seeing it as an end. He underscored the importance of security sovereignty to expel disruptive elements from the country and food sovereignty to ensure self-sufficiency.
Economic, monetary, and cultural sovereignty were also emphasized as critical areas for ensuring that national resources benefit the people and cultural identity is preserved. Traore urged citizens to honor Sankara's legacy through tangible efforts in security, agriculture, industry, education, and services.
President Traore commended the dedication of the Defense and Security Forces, the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland, and various societal groups in supporting the nation's defense and development. He also expressed gratitude towards the municipality of Rome's third district for naming a park after Sankara.
The Thomas Sankara Memorial, which opened to the public on May 19, 2025, has attracted over two hundred thousand visitors by September 30, 2026, generating significant funds for its infrastructure projects.
