The Burkinabe Society of Rheumatology has invited citizens to adopt a healthy lifestyle, a healthy diet and to practice sport to prevent this disease which affects the joints, tendons, muscles and bones.World Rheumatism Day takes place every October 12.To commemorate the event, the Burkinabe Society of Rheumatology (SBR) is organizing free consultations on Thursday and Friday for the benefit of the populations of Pouytenga, in the Centre-East regionOn the first day, more than 200 people showed up at the Pouytenga Medical Center for consultation and awareness sessions.SBR President Dr Wendlassida Joëlle Stéphanie Zabsonré/Tiendrébéogo said that rheumatology deals with diseases of the bones, joints, muscles and tendons.According to Dr Zabsonré, osteoarthritis is the most common cause of rheumatological problems in Burkina Faso, representing two thirds of rheumatology consultations.The disease manifests itself through pain in the back (lumbar region), neck and knees."Lumbago, which is the theme cho sen for this celebration, is the classic back pain that we know, that people call kidney pain, and which causes pain in the lower back. It is often caused by improper use of the back. In our context, for example, when doing household chores, we sweep in unsuitable postures, with our backs bent," explained the rheumatologist working at the Bogodogo University Hospital.Dr Wendlassida Joëlle Stéphanie Zabsonré/Tiendrébéogo also mentioned gout, which she says is caused by excessive consumption of alcohol, carbonated drinks and meat.To prevent these conditions, the president of the SBR recommends a healthy lifestyle, as well as regular physical activity to keep joints, muscles, tendons and bones healthy.It also recommends a healthy diet, rich in vegetables and low in fats and sugars.Source: Burkina Information Agency
