Renewable Energies Drive Africa’s Energy Transition with Solar Power and Green Innovations


Ouagadougou: In an insightful discussion with AIB, physicist and research director Omar Sanogo highlighted the pivotal role of solar, biomass, and hydroelectric power in Africa’s energy transition, alongside groundbreaking innovations such as artificial intelligence and green hydrogen.



According to Burkina Information Agency, renewable energies encompass all energy sources that can naturally replenish themselves within a human timescale. This includes solar energy from the sun, wind energy generated by the wind, hydroelectric energy from water, geothermal energy from the Earth’s depths, and biomass. These sources share the ability to renew themselves naturally over relatively short periods, making them essential for sustainable development.



Renewable energies hold significant importance for Africa due to their potential to address electricity production and distribution imbalances, particularly in rural areas often underserved by traditional networks. They also offer an opportunity for energy independence, crucial for countries like Burkina Faso, which rely heavily on imported hydrocarbons. By developing renewable energies, these nations can reduce external dependence and enhance energy sovereignty. Furthermore, renewable energies are recognized as effective solutions to limit greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change, making them vital for environmental protection.



Solar energy stands out as the primary renewable resource in Africa, and particularly in Burkina Faso, due to the region’s abundant sunshine, estimated at 3,000 to 3,500 hours annually. Hydroelectricity, produced from dams such as Kompienga and Bagr©, also contributes significantly. Additionally, biomass, although largely untapped, presents a promising energy resource.



Access to electricity in rural areas can be improved through the distribution of solar kits and the establishment of mini solar grids. These solutions are cost-effective compared to extending large electricity networks, enabling rural populations to benefit from individual solar kits, mini-grids, or biogas digesters. The rapid evolution of solar energy storage, with costs decreasing dramatically, further enhances these solutions. The green hydrogen sector is also emerging as a promising technology, already explored by several African countries.



Innovations transforming the energy sector include initiatives to produce green hydrogen from solar power plants and the development of smart electrical networks utilizing artificial intelligence. These advancements, supported by platforms that anticipate energy demand using meteorological data, optimize the management of renewable energies and contribute to a more efficient energy landscape in Africa.
