Niou:The Regional Directorate of Family and Solidarity of Oubri, in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP), has launched a project aimed at strengthening the resilience of 300 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and members of vulnerable host communities, including 50 individuals in the commune of Niou.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the project was presented on October 21, 2026, during a meeting chaired by Salamata Maïga, President of the special delegation of the commune of Niou. The meeting included the Regional Director of Family and Solidarity of Oubri, Bassirou Nacro, and brought together provincial education officials, department heads, school board representatives, and religious and traditional authorities.
The project seeks to address the vulnerability of displaced populations and host communities by providing training in dyeing and weaving, along with installation kits. Salamata Maïga highlighted the importance of stakeholder support and involvement in the project's implementation, urging participants to actively contribute to its success.
Regional Director Bassirou Nacro explained that the initiative aims to train participants in dyeing trades and plans to extend training to weaving, eventually organizing them into cooperatives. The goal is to improve the beneficiaries' living conditions, reduce vulnerability, and promote economic empowerment. The cooperatives will meet the demand for traditional school uniforms, and a draft agreement with the education sector is being examined to facilitate this.
Kondegma Sawadogo, President of the Niou cooperative, expressed enthusiasm for the project, seeing it as a means to reduce household vulnerability. She noted the community's commitment to making the initiative a success, having already received dyeing training, with weaving training forthcoming. The project is intended to strengthen economic capacities and promote socio-economic integration for the targeted communities.
