Russia Regards Alliance of Sahel States as Commitment to Regional Security

Moscow: Russia views the Alliance of Sahel States (ESA) as a manifestation of the determination of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali to build a new regional security architecture, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov said, after holding a bilateral meeting with his Nigerien counterpart, General Salifou Modi. "I am pleased to meet you. Thank you for accepting the invitation to attend the ceremonies commemorating the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War," Mr. Belousov said.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Russian minister emphasized the importance of the ESA as a demonstration of the resolve of Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali to establish a regional security framework and pursue an independent foreign policy based on their national interests and capabilities. He noted that the presence of the Nigerien minister at the event underscored the shared significance of victory over fascism.

General Modi expressed gratitude to Andrei Belousov for the invitation and reciprocated the sentiments of mutual cooperation. During their discussions, the two ministers addressed current issues concerning military cooperation, highlighting the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration in achieving security objectives.
