San Culture Festival Highlights Cultural Identity and Peace

Ouagadougou: The 5th edition of the San Culture Festival (FESCUSAN) commenced this Thursday at the Jean Pierre Guingan© Youth and Culture Palace in Ouagadougou, focusing on the theme "Cultural identity: from peace through culture to the culture of peace." Running until May 1, 2025, the festival aims to spotlight the rich heritage of the San community through various traditional performances and exhibitions.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the festival will feature mask dances, performances by flutists and artists, and gastronomic exhibitions showcasing local San dishes. Promoter Urbain To© sees the event as more than just a celebration. "It is above all a place of remembrance, education, promotion, and transmission of values," he stated, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural identity amidst globalization.

Bertrand To©, Chief of Staff of the Minister of Territorial Administration, representing the Minister of State, expressed strong support for the initiative. He noted that the festival's theme is crucial in a context marked by social tensions and identity upheavals, highlighting the need to anchor in cultural values to build a common future. He praised the San people for maintaining a rich cultural heritage through their language, social organization, and artistic practices.

FESCUSAN, now in its fifth edition, serves as a platform to revisit and share the San people's cultural wealth, with an emphasis on passing it to future generations. Urbain To© described the festival as a dynamic response to contemporary challenges, noting the role of culture in economic, social, and political development. The inclusion of cultural and creative industries opens doors to employment and exchanges, underlining culture's evolving and living nature.

The Bissa community has been honored as the guest of honor at this edition, further enriching the festival's celebration of cultural diversity and harmony.
