Sandbondtenga: The association ‘Supporting the emergence and development of the local economy in Africa’ (SEVE-Africa), in partnership with the NGO Oxfam, distributed poultry farming kits worth 4,497,333 FCFA to 71 vulnerable households in the municipality of Kaya on Tuesday. In total, 497 breeding poultry (426 hens and 71 roosters), 71 feeders, 71 waterers, 3.55 tonnes of improved feed and veterinary products were given to the beneficiaries.
According to Burkina Information Agency, this donation operation is part of the project “Strengthening the resilience and social cohesion of populations affected by crises and the impacts of climate change”, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It aims to recapitalize the livestock of beneficiary households and to sustainably improve their livelihoods, following training sessions on good livestock farming practices.
SEVE-Africa coordinator Sandrine Diallo/Kabor© stated that the security crisis, marked by the displacement of populations towards the capitals of communes, notably Kaya, has led to the loss of livelihoods for many vulnerable households. For her, the distribution of livestock kits will allow households affected by the security crisis to rebuild their livelihoods destroyed or looted by terrorism and the effects of climate change. “This donation will allow vulnerable households to rebuild their livestock and meet their socio-economic needs,” she said.
Ms. Diallo added that SEVE-Africa plans, in the coming days, to support 500 producers with agricultural input kits (NPK, urea, cowpea and sorghum seeds) with an estimated value of 30 million FCFA. The head of the livestock technical support zones in the Kaya commune welcomed this initiative by SEVE-Africa. According to him, it will allow each beneficiary to revive their production.
He stressed that the implementation of this project is in line with the national policy to revive the livestock sector in Burkina Faso, before inviting the beneficiaries to strictly respect the veterinary guidelines in order to ensure the success of their activities. For their part, the beneficiaries expressed their satisfaction and gratitude towards SEVE-Africa and its partners. They also reaffirmed their commitment to putting into practice the knowledge acquired during basic livestock training, with a view to strengthening their economic empowerment.
