Dori: The governor of the Liptako and Soum region, Abdoul Karim Zongo, urged for the promotion of national languages through documentation, teaching, and integration into education, media, and modern technologies. This call to action was made during the official launch of African Languages Week and International Mother Language Day, which took place at the Niarala Non-Formal Basic Education Center (CEBNF), attended by government officials and education sector stakeholders.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Governor Abdoul Karim Zongo, representing the Minister in charge of the Promotion of National Languages, acknowledged the efforts of the organizers and encouraged citizens to embrace these cultural and educational initiatives. The theme for the 2026 edition is "Sustainable Waters, Shared Voices: African Languages as a Safe Water and Sanitation Channel for the Africa We Want," while the sub-theme highlights "the role of African proverbs, oral traditions and cultural narratives in promoting water conservation and sanitation responsibility."
The regional director of Preschool, Primary and Non-Formal Education (DREPPNF), Noufou Tao, stated that the celebration, scheduled from May 4 to 9, 2026, will feature conferences, the national anthem sung in national languages, and ancestral tales across educational structures. Mr. Tao expressed optimism that these gatherings would serve as meaningful platforms for discussing mother tongues.
Governor Zongo highlighted the significance of these events in preserving, promoting, and transmitting African languages, which he regards as treasures of intangible heritage. He noted UNESCO's emphasis on the critical role of mother tongues in education, social cohesion, and sustainable development in Burkina Faso.
Additionally, Mr. Zongo conveyed his support and gratitude towards the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), honoring the soldiers who lost their lives and wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.
