Sissili: Accompanied by a technical delegation, the province's top official met with stakeholders revitalizing the wheat sector in Sissili. For the 2025-2026 dry season, the province has already allocated over 21.5 hectares out of a regional target of 204 hectares, spread across the municipalities of Bi©ha, L©o, Niabouri, Silly, and To.
According to Burkina Information Agency, at the Wavessan site, the president of the group, Gabia Poulie, expressed his satisfaction as the harvest approaches. "We responded to the call of President Ibrahim Traor©, because wheat is consumed massively in our country. Producing locally is a national necessity," he declared. However, he argued for hydro-agricultural development of the site in order to reduce production costs related to manual pumping.
At the provincial high school in L©o, on a 0.34-hectare site, the initiative led by the principal and supervisor Alain Bado has mobilized students and staff. "The students immediately embraced it. We've even started small-scale processing to produce bread and cakes," Mr. Bado explained. He nevertheless highlighted major challenges, including access to water with a well located over 200 meters away, securing the site against stray animals, and leveling the land.
The provincial director of agriculture for Sissili, Lassan© Sawadogo, sought to reassure the public regarding the viability of wheat cultivation. "Wheat is no longer an exotic crop here. We use short-cycle varieties that are resistant to heat stress, notably Dir12," he explained. He announced that measures are already in place for dredging waterways and developing hydraulic infrastructure to strengthen future growing seasons.
For the High Commissioner, this immersion confirms the province's potential. "The objective is clear: to guarantee food sovereignty. It is imperative to produce what we consume so that we are no longer dependent on imports," he emphasized. He also highlighted the expected economic benefits, particularly in terms of youth employability and supplying local bakeries with domestically produced flour.
Present at the high school, the provincial director of Secondary Education, Vocational and Technical Training (DPESFPT), Serge Lawabien To©, took the opportunity to invite all schools in the province to follow the example of the provincial high school, by integrating wheat production and processing into their educational activities.
During this visit, the delegation went to the headquarters of the Nian Zw¨ Federation (FNZ), a SONAGESS field collection point. The authorities noted with satisfaction that the Sissili province had exceeded its cereal production forecasts for the past wet season.
