Sourou Province Confronts Rainfall Disruption and Needs of Returning Populations

Tougan:Members of the Sourou Provincial Consultation Framework (CCP) convened their second ordinary session of the year to address critical issues concerning the 2026 rainy season, the emergency plan for the upcoming dry season, and the priority needs for populations returning to the province.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the session, which took place on October 22, 2026, was chaired by Désiré Badolo, the High Commissioner of Sourou Province. The meeting was financially supported by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC).

Sami Kambiré, an agricultural engineer at the provincial directorate, presented a concerning report on the 2026 wet season, highlighting significant disruptions and decreased rainfall compared to the previous year. Only three substantial rainfalls were reported in Tougan. Despite these challenges, the province received substantial allocations of seeds and fertilizers from the State to support the agricultural campaign.

Plans for the 2026-2027 dry season include additional state support, with allocations of vegetable and wheat seeds, as well as fertilizers. Furthermore, the "One lowland, one borehole" initiative provided boreholes to support agricultural activities.

Addressing the needs of returning populations, Assami Kiendrébéogo, representing the provincial director of humanitarian action, noted that approximately 65,000 people have returned, requiring essential support in housing, food, water, healthcare, education, and social protection. The government has distributed food and dignity kits, but significant needs, including food, kits, boreholes, and latrines, remain.

High Commissioner Badolo emphasized the importance of the Provincial Consultation Framework for coordinated efforts in addressing these challenges and expressed gratitude to the DRC for its support in facilitating the session.
