Special Rabies Vaccination Campaign Begins in R©o to Combat Deadly Disease

Sangui©: A special rabies vaccination campaign has been launched in R©o, aiming to protect both animals and people from rabies, a deadly zoonotic disease. The launch ceremony was presided over by the president of the special delegation of the commune of R©o, Mr. Issaka Cindy Zagr©, alongside the provincial director in charge of agriculture, animal and fisheries resources of Sangui©, Mr. Toukounogo Salom© Ouedraogo, technical officials, and a large crowd of people.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Mr. Issaka Cindy Zagr© addressed the participants, encouraging the public to take advantage of this entirely free campaign. He emphasized that rabies is a disease transmissible from animals to humans and that vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent it. He urged all pet owners to participate in the campaign and warned that regulatory measures would be applied against unvaccinated animals after the campaign, including a ban on access to certain public spaces.

The provincial director of animal and fisheries resources of Sangui© stated that the campaign aims to vaccinate as many animals as possible to break the chain of rabies transmission in the province. He highlighted that rabies is a deadly and incurable disease once it has taken hold, making prevention crucial. The campaign is seen as an opportunity to protect families and communities.

Mr. Toukounogo Salom© Ou©draogo explained that the special campaign would run from February 11 to 14, 2026, at various sites in the municipality of R©o, such as the R©o town hall, Perkoa, Goundi, the livestock department, and other technical services. He added that rabies vaccination would continue at usual veterinary clinics even after this period, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., remaining free of charge as it is subsidized by the State.

A vaccinated dog owner, B. Bienvenue N'Do, residing in sector 2 of R©o, praised the initiative and invited the population to participate. He noted that vaccinating dogs is in everyone's interest as dog diseases can infect humans, and vaccination protects both the owner and others.

Through this campaign, authorities aim to strengthen health prevention, reduce the risks of infected bites, and promote healthy coexistence between humans and pets in the commune of R©o and throughout the province of Sangui©.
