Tannounyan: Actors in the criminal justice system are considering the effectiveness of alternatives to prosecution and imprisonment in Banfora. The courtroom of the Banfora courthouse hosted the first session of the Consultation Framework for Actors in the Criminal Justice System (CCACP), under the theme "Role of actors in the criminal justice system for the effectiveness of alternative measures to prosecution and imprisonment".
According to Burkina Information Agency, the session was chaired by the Prosecutor of Faso at the High Court of Banfora, Idriss Ollo Pale, and included judicial authorities and officials from the judicial police of the region. Comrade Idriss Ollo Pale noted that the body facilitates experience sharing among judicial police and addresses difficulties in implementing the Government's criminal policy, aiming to enhance the criminal justice system's functioning.
Central to the discussions were alternatives to prosecution and imprisonment, introduced through recent reforms to the Code of Criminal Procedure. The Prosecutor emphasized these innovations arose from recognizing limitations in traditional methods that rely on legal proceedings and incarceration.
"We realized that it was necessary to innovate by finding other ways to resolve criminal disputes without systematically resorting to prison. These measures help to restore social peace, put an end to disturbances of public order and better meet the expectations of those seeking justice," he explained.
Measures such as criminal mediation, now open to adults, judicial agreement in the public interest for legal entities, and criminal composition were discussed in detail. These mechanisms promise faster case processing, reduced prison overcrowding, and more suitable responses to offenses.
The Prosecutor highlighted that these measures allow better consideration of victims' interests, offering faster and more satisfactory redress solutions. When victims receive redress, they regain confidence in the justice system, a major objective of the reforms.
These measures also contribute to streamlining public spending by reducing unnecessary imprisonment, saving on detention costs, and potentially generating revenue for the public treasury, enhancing public finances.
The Prosecutor expressed gratitude to Burkina Faso's authorities for their commitment to modernizing the judicial system, with special thanks to the Minister of Justice for reforms that bring justice closer to citizens and enhance its contribution to societal well-being.
According to him, the new Code of Criminal Procedure reflects national authorities' commitment to a more efficient, humane, and relevant justice system. He urged stakeholders to embrace these reforms for successful implementation, benefiting those seeking justice.
Chief Warrant Officer Hamed Raoul Toe, Commander of the Sideradougou Territorial Gendarmerie Brigade, lauded the first CCACP session as an opportunity to strengthen law enforcement capabilities. He appreciated alternatives to imprisonment, particularly community service, for enabling offenders to contribute to society while engaging in community-beneficial projects, fostering offender rehabilitation and communal development.
Through this inaugural CCACP session, criminal justice actors in the region aim to strengthen collaboration, ensuring effective implementation of new criminal reforms for a more modern, accessible, and efficient justice system.
